be present

What We Love: be present has been a longtime favorite of the staff here at YOGANONYMOUS. Made in the USA & eco-conscious, be present is a brand you can feel good about spending your money on, and the fact that they are a family owned and operated business means that contacting their customer service doesn’t make you want to cringe. A long-time favorite of ours, their Lotus Mobility Pant, gives you the freedom to move in and out of your asana practice and look graceful doing it. Comfort and quality are synonymous with be present, and with over a decade of dedication to the practice, they take the guesswork out of what you need on the mat to be content. Take advantage of their free shipping before 10/31.

Who They Are: be present, founded in 2002, is an eco-conscious, Colorado based yoga clothing company sold in yoga studios, boutiques, resorts and spas worldwide. Every be present item is proudly made in the USA. We are a small, family owned business that values close relationships, environmentally friendly practices and overall, simply doing the right thing. We wear be present clothes to yoga, to work, to travel, to hike, to climb, and to live.

Where to Find Them: Connect with be present on the web, Facebook + @bepresentinc on Twitter.
How to Save: Enjoy free shipping on all orders throughout the U.S. until 10/31/13.

prAna

What We Love: We can’t say enough about prAna’s OMazing gear. With over 20 years of experience, you know you are getting the best bang for your buck, and we’d love to just give their designers a hug. True to size, comfortable, flattering, quality, we could go on and on. Their Nenah sweater has become a staple item in our yoga ensemble. It’s perfect for throwing on after class during the chilly Fall months and looks great no matter where you’re headed—as with the majority of the line.

Who They Are: “We started prAna to give form and function to the connections we felt to the outdoors and being alive in the moment. Climbing and yoga brought us there, and inspired our tag line ‘Born from the experience.’ 20 years later,  we continue to strive to apply this moment to moment focus and  it is our hope that when people wear prAna, they can feel the intention and passion that is woven into everything we make and everything we do. ” ~Beaver Theodosakis, Founder, prAna

New Music Spotlight: Mango Melody

10/13/2013

Mango Melody  is the brainchild of brother and sister Mike and Tracey Stockalper, who hail from Encinitas in North County San Diego, California. Mike and Tracey are notoriously goofy people who for years pursued their own “serious” separate musical inclinations only to find that when playing together what seemed to emerge was music of a more playful, dynamic, fun, and much more life-celebrating flavor.

After spending some time playing and performing mostly cover music around North County San Diego, the duo eventually formed Mango Melody in 2012, and immediately undertook to write original songs.  What resulted was  “Fruit of Happiness”, their first album, scheduled to be self-released in early fall 2013.

The duo’s goal for their first work was to in create music specifically geared to bring into a live forum.  In other words, Mike and Tracey believe that the album will be best experienced at a live show, where the raw energy of the music and gathering of people fuel the full experience.  At their performances, the band welcomes fans to take part in the fun by singing along, wearing bright mango-colored clothing, and/or bringing along several friends to experience the fun.

On the days you are being a little too hard on yourself, take a listen to "I'm not perfect" for a friendly reminder in the form of this charming tune.

Imagine... empowerment of our youth through mindfulness, nutrition & yoga

The Yoga Rocks the Park San Diego Community is a proud supporter of the Sean O'Shea Foundation and is excited to introduce the 2013 Sean O’Shea Foundation Fundraising Campaign.

Picture

Imagine...
  • Hard-core gang members representing four violent gangs all practicing yoga and lying in savasana together… peacefully.
  • A probation officer witnessing students on his caseload improve their grades with skills taught in the Sean O'Shea Foundation Yoga and nutrition program.
  • School psychologists requesting the Sean O'Shea Foundation program to help their at-risk youth develop greater focus and confidence.
  • Thousands of students learning to cope with their daily challenges and stressful life situations through yoga and meditation.
  • Young cancer patients learning to decrease their pain and anxiety through breath and meditation as they battle their life threatening disease.
  • Local homeless teens having a welcoming place to go to for a hot meal.

All of this has come true since 2008 for nearly
9,000 children, thanks to supporters of the Sean O'Shea Foundation.

The Sean O’Shea Foundation’s 2013 fundraising campaign is focused on Empowering Youth in our communities.  We primarily focus on youth who live in economically disadvantaged areas, who often lack basic health care, have limited exposure to the benefits of nutrition, and are normally unfamiliar with the practice of yoga. Remarkably, during the past four years we have ensured that all of our students have been able to participate in our programs free of charge.

The foundation is named in honor of  Sean O’Shea, a much loved yoga teacher and studio owner (Four Seasons Yoga in La Jolla) who lost his life in a fatal freeway accident in December of 2006. In his memory, his family and friends established the Sean O’Shea Foundation, which empowers youth through yoga, nutrition education, and optimistic teachings. Our mission is to help youth, ages 8-18, develop life skills that can enable them to take responsibility for their lives, develop respect for themselves and others, and have confidence in their own potential.

Current Programs

With the collaboration of health professionals, school psychologists, yoga instructors, and school teachers, we have developed these successful programs:
Picture
  • Training for school faculty in chair yoga and meditation for the classroom
  • Seven-week yoga and nutrition program for students ages 8-18
  • Year-round yoga and nutrition program for interested schools with a high percentage of at-risk students
  • Year-round yoga for juvenile court-mandated students
  • Programs for pregnant teens and teen parents committed to continuing their education
  • Yoga and meditation for kids with cancer and yoga for their families.
  • Our newest program - providing nutritious meals for homeless teens

How You Can Support the Empowerment of Youth

$25

A $25 donation will provide an at-risk child/teen with our seven-week mindfulness-based yoga and nutrition program. This includes yoga supplies, literature, a certified and experienced yoga teacher, one nutrition workshop and cooking lesson, six yoga lessons, a certificate of completion, plus a water bottle or other small gift!

$100

A $100 donation will provide food for our homeless teen meal program or a nutrition assembly.  Help us empower the youth of our local communities...donate today!  We honor Sean's good life, and we are honored to continue his vision.

5 Things Yogis Should Know About Their Feet

10/6/2013

“Lift and spread your toes”. You’ll hear this while setting up for Tadasana. The goal is to create a sturdy, rooted base for the foundation of this pose.

These two small planks at the end of our body are powerful. Your feet are responsible for our ability to walk, run, jump, and yoga. Besides in Mountain Pose, how often are you aware of your feet and each little piggy? Here are a couple reasons to give your roots more love:

1. 1/4 of all the bones in the body are in your feet. When these bones are out of alignment, so is the rest of your body.

2. A small percentage of people are born with foot problems, yet 3 out of 4 Americans experience serious foot health issues in their lifetime. Squishing your feet into ill-fitting shoes can cause small muscles in the foot to weaken, leading to a variety of foot problems.

3. During an average day of walking, the total forces on your feet can total hundreds of tons, equivalent to an average of a fully loaded cement truck.

PictureAshton Szabo's happy feet in Five Toe Sandals
4. Traditional shoes and socks draw toes together making your toes act as one unit, like a hoof, and… you aren’t a horse.

5. Your toes, each significant, are designed to spread for push off and balance. Give them room to do what they are designed to do.

Spreading your toes is the best thing you can do for your feet. Strong feet enhance stability, agility, and full-body support. Spread ‘em (in ToeSox is even better).
